The famous Alonzo Herndon family of Atlanta, Georgia rose from the chains of slavery to attain leadership in business, education, culture, and philanthropy and in turn gain an excellent name among the people of Atlanta and also travelers on Atlanta travel.
Alonzo Herndon was a black American in the pre-social reforms era and became Atlanta's most famous barber and founding father of the famous Atlanta Life Insurance Company, one of the major Black financial institutions in the United States of America today.
Alonzo's wife, Adrienne McNeil, gained fame as the honorary head of dramatics department at the Atlanta University. Alonzo's son, Norris, and his second wife, Jessie, sustained the family's legacy in commerce and charity. The Herndon family captures the progress of African Americans in the business domain and proffer a critical viewpoint on the history of Atlanta as a whole.
The house of the Herndon family exemplifies the struggle of the African American community and their rise in commerce and prestige in a time that was tough for them. The house is modelled along Victorian lines and has a very unique architecture.
