One of the most famous basketball teams in the US is the Atlanta Dream. It is based in Atlanta, Georgia and is a Women's National Basketball Association team. It played its first season in the year 2008. It is owned by Kathy Betty with Marynell Meadors being both the General Manager and Head Coach for the team.

It was said that Atlanta would act as a WNBA expansion but the efforts did not prove to be fruitful. Finally by 2007 an organizing committee comprising of politicians and businessmen succeeded in attracting an expansion team by gaining volunteers, signing petitions and taking pledges for season tickets. The committee got 1,200 commitments by the end of July.

To select the team name and colours there was an online contest announced on December 5, 2007. The names which were offered as suggestions were 'Dream', 'Sizzle', 'Surge' and 'Flight'. The voters were also given a choice for team colours like hot pink, lime green, etc. on January 23, 2008 the WNBA franchise announced that the team colours would be sky blue, red and white while the team would be called Dream. It selected the players by choosing one each from the thirteen teams in the league.

The Dream lost many games often making records of having the maximum number of losses in the matches consecutively. But it also registered its first victory in 2008/2009 offseason against Chicago Sky. The Atlanta Dream's current arena is Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
