In-depth! A Great Intro of Atlanta History
The history of Atlanta dates back to the period of antebellum. Atlanta has been one of the fastest developing cities in the US. This city has transformed itself quickly from a regional commerce center to one of the most influential cities in the world. The region where the city of Atlanta has developed was originally by the Cherokee and the Creeks. Creeks fought a war which came to be known as the Creek War in 1812, when they attacked Fort Mims and burnt it to carry British orders.
This Native American land was opened for settlement in 1823 when some of the Cherokee leaders exchanged their land. This treaty is known as the treaty of New Echota. Georgia General Assembly passed a bill to establish a trade route for this place with the Midwest. Thus, it established a rail route known as the Western and Atlantic Railroad. The first train carrying freight and passengers through Georgia Railroad reached the station in 1845. By 1847, newspapers began to be published and hotels were built in the city. The city had its first mayor in the year 1848.
Atlanta played a key role during the American Civil War. It served as the main supply line of military through railroad. The city was invaded by William T. Sherman, who was the Union Major General during the war. Atlanta was devastated through Battle of Ezra Church, Battle of Atlanta, and Battle of Peachtree Creek. The city was reconstructed and hence the symbol of the city is Phoenix. Post war, Atlanta was rebuilt anew with a population of Americans and African Americans as its first residents settling in the new city.
