Bonaventure Cemetery

Why would a cemetery be listed under a city’s attractions? There must be a very overbearing reason for this. Find out all about the Bonaventure Cemetery here.

There are two major reasons for the Bonaventure Cemetery to be placed among the top attractions of Savannah. In the first place, the cemetery was once a very well maintained and beautiful plantation on the banks of the Wilmington River. The second reason that catapulted the cemetery to fame was Clint Eastwood’s film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” which was based on the novel by John Brendt.

For the sheer beauty of the place, the flora and fauna that surrounds the cemetery alone, you should put this on top of your must see attractions during your Savanna Georgia travel.

Permanent residents of the cemetery include some of Savanna’s famous sons like the songwriter Johnny Mercer, Conrad Aiken - the novelist and veterans of the Civil War. That apart, the cemetery has also come to be regarded as the ‘most haunted cemetery’ that too in a city reckoned as the most haunted anywhere in the world.

The sculpture garden in the cemetery is sure to capture your attention for the elaborate crypts, towering obelisks, the intricate headstones that are carved with impressive poetic epitaphs, and the statues themselves that are strikingly realistic. It is often difficult to imagine a place of graves to be so strikingly appealing, full of nature and its myriad forms of beauty, but that is what the Bonaventure is in Savannah.

All that the Bonaventure presents is perhaps most beautifully summed up in the travelogue by John Muir who undertook a “Thousand mile walk” to Florida. During the journey Muir spent 6 full days - and the nights too in the cemetery.

One reason to choose the cemetery for his lodging was that Muir was waiting for money to be wired to him, but the other reason was that he found this to be the perfect place as not only the cheapest but the safest accommodation he could find. The experience was so compelling that he devoted an entire chapter titled “Camping in the tombs” describing breathtaking beauty of the cemetery.

To learn more about the cemetery and enjoy its beauty you should ensure that your Savanna ga travel deals are inclusive of this attraction.
