Flannery O’Connor Childhood Home
Mary Flannery O’Connor lived only a short span of 39 years, but has left behind a huge treasure of novels and short stories for the posterity.
The childhood home of the famous writer belongs to the early 1900s and most part of the home is comprised of different apartments. The first floor which is open for tours however is preserved in the 1930 style.
Some of the furnishings on this floor once belonged to the O’Connor family and many of them represent period pieces. The famous writer lived here for the first 13 years of her life before moving to Milledgeville, Georgia with her family to be with her grandmother.
In recent times, the home has been extensively renovated and the two main floors restored to the times when the O’Connor family were residents here during 1925-1938. The Bruckheimer Library represents a collection of books that were possibly owned by the O’Connor family and includes other books with a special relevance. Linda Bruckheimer was largely responsible for a major part of the renovation work as well as the library. You have the opportunity to learn more about this home during your Savannah ga travel.

The home is presently being managed by the Flannery O’Connor Childhood home foundation. The basement and the top floor of the home are now apartments and the rental income from them helps to sustain the activities of the foundation. In 1993 a walled garden was added at the rear of the home and is today open for visitors to enjoy.
Staffing and operations of the home is done wholly through volunteers and the foundation hosts free series of lectures and readings during every spring and fall.
