Old Fort Jackson Historic Site

The oldest brick fort in Georgia Fort James Jackson is also popular as Old Fort Jackson. With a history spanning over two centuries this historic site has plenty on offer when you travel to Savannah.

Old Fort Jackson was built in 1808 and used the foundation of an earlier earthen fort that was built at the time of the Revolutionary War. During the Civil war both the Union forces and the Confederate forces had control over the fort at varying points in time.

James Jackson was a Colonel in the American Army and later became the Governor of Georgia as well as United States representative and senator. The fort is named after this great soldier.

In the days following the Civil war the importance of the fort diminished in military terms and in 1923 it was even considered fit to sell the fort. The Coastal Heritage Society has presently leased the fort from the State of Georgia. CHS is a non-profit body and does not receive any federal or state funds. Education and restoration efforts of the society are supported through proceeds from events.

When you travel in Savannah GA in modern times, you have the opportunity to visit the extensive museum at the Fort which has on display the tools and weaponry employed a few centuries ago as well as artifacts from CSS Georgia, a confederate ship that sank in this region.

While at the fort, you can also appreciate the strategic importance of the Fort in protecting Savannah. The Slow Travel evening is an event hosted by the CHS and draws large number of tourists and local. The event includes dinner apart from plenty of music and entertainment.
