Owens - Thomas House
Owens - Thomas House in Savannah is home to the ‘historic house museum’ which is operated by the Telfair Museum of Art. The history of the house dates back to early 19th century when it was originally built for Richard Richardson, a cotton merchant and Francis Bolton, his wife in the 1819.
Francis Bolton was also the sister-in-law of William Jay, the architect who designed the stylish residence at the young age of 24. But, the financial depression of the 1820 lead to the Richardsons losing the house in quick time.
For the next 10 years, the house became a boarding house and during 1825, Marquis de Layfayette, (Revolutionary War Hero) was a guest at this boarding house. This celebrated Frenchman used the ornate balcony on the southern part of the house to deliver two of his addresses to the multitude of adoring citizens of Savannah.
