Among the oldest churches in Savannah is the First African Baptist Church whose history dates back to 1773. This church has also played a major role during the American Civil war and securing freedom for the slaves in the post war era. In recent times, the congregation at the First African Baptist Church has undertaken a large scale renovation which included improvement in visitor facilities, replacing the steeple blown off during the 1892 hurricane and more.
