Savannah History

Some knowledge of Savannah history will be handy when you travel Savannah to understand the various attractions the City has on offer, in greater detail.

Savannah was founded on the 12th of February, 1733 by James Oglethorpe. The Layout of the city followed a plan designed by Oglethorpe. The plan incorporated streets, alleys and squares to provide a look that would be distinctive from the other cities of America. The Yamacraw Indians who enjoyed friendly relations with the settlers assisted in the development of the colony.

When Georgia started growing, the political importance of Savannah started diminishing even though it gained as a port city. Savannah has remained the main port for Georgia in the past as well as the present. Rice and cotton formed the main exports during colonial days and cotton gained predominance as the king crop of Georgia.

Savannah was also chosen for the first banking center in Georgia and a number of other banks followed suit. This was followed by the rail road which came into operation in 1843 with trains going to Macon initially and later to Atlanta. The railroad paved way for larger exports, particularly that of cotton.

Savannah has endured its share of catastrophes too. 1820 brought a terrible fire and an epidemic in the form of yellow fever. The fire which destroyed some 463 buildings occurred in January only to be closely followed by the epidemic in April. This resulted in a majority of the population evacuating the city of Savannah. The city was subsequently rebuilt in 1825.

In modern times, Savannah has come to be recognized as a sought after tourist destination thanks largely to the efforts in historic preservation. The downtown district or the Landmark District is designated as Registered National Historic Landmark. Visitors arriving here have the opportunity of enjoying the diverse and beautiful architecture from the glorious past of Savannah.
