Savannah History Museum
The Savannah History museum is the singular museum dedicated to the entire coastal community in Savannah and is housed in the Central railroad’s Passenger station. This passenger station belongs to the period before the Civil War and ranks 43rd among National Historical Landmarks in Georgia.
Between 1972 and 1984 the passenger station was being used by the railways and thereafter ‘The Great Savannah Exposition’ moved in to this building. Savannah History museum was the successor to the exposition, which was taken over by the Coastal Heritage Society in 1990. When you travel in Savannah you have the opportunity of learning more on this museum in person. To acquaint yourself more with the museum you can use the web links provided on this page.

The Savannah History Museum today exhibits over 10,000 artifacts and is the largest of such collections for the whole coastal community. The exhibits at the museum showcase a diverse range beginning with the founding days of Savannah in 1733 to the most modern times.
Among the notable exhibits at the museum are the changing exhibits of women’s fashions drawn from the 19th and 20th centuries, exhibits relating to the Revolutionary War (Battle of Savannah) and canoes from the 1800s. The museum also houses a carriage that belonged to Juliette Gordon Lowe, the founder of Girl Scouts, Forest Gump’s bench, military uniforms and weapons.
The exhibits area at the museum spread across 20,000 square foot has a wide range of artifacts drawn from varying periods in the history of Savannah. The in-house plush theater screens the film “Savannah the Survivor” which offers a visual treat on the history of Savannah.
