Telfair Museum Of Art
Among the art museums in the South, Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah ranks as the oldest. Mary Telfair, a local philanthropist who was prominent in his times, is credited with the founding efforts for the museum. The home and furnishings of Mary Telfair were left to the Historical Society of Georgia through a bequest to become a museum. The history of the museum dates back to 1883 and for a detailed account of the history of this museum you can refer to a Savannah Georgia Travel Guide.

In modern times, Telfair comprises of 3 unique buildings, The Telfair Academy, Jepson Center for the Arts, and Owens Thomas House. Notably, both the Telfair Academy and the Owens Thomas House have their beginnings dating back to the early parts of the 19th century.
Each of these buildings present an innovative expression appropriate to its time and the collections within represent the era when the building came into existence. At the Telfair Academy visitors can enjoy American as well as European Art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Owen Thomas House is completely different in style and ranks among the finest examples in English Regency Architecture found in America. Visitors to the Owens Thomas House can appreciate the house museum that features decorative art from the 18th and 19th centuries apart from a lovely parterre garden and an intact ‘urban slave quarters’ that is rare.
The Jepson Center, the third member in the Telfair family is devoted to art of present times. Thus, when viewed as a composite entity, the Telfair museum presents 3 distinct collections in three different buildings illustrating the art and history of Savannah over the last three centuries.
