History: The area which hosts the city of Atlanta was homeland to the Cherokee and Creek Native American tribes and it was called by the name, "Standing Peachtree." It was taken by the American settlers from the tribes in 1822. This city played an important role as a railroad and supply of military weapons during the American Civil war. Several famous battles were fought in this area like the Battle of Peachtree Creek, Battle of Ezra Church and Battle of Atlanta. Atlanta became famous in Sports history when it hosted the Summer Olympics in 1996.

The feather in the cap came when the city was admired by Environmental Protection Agency for its stand on eco-friendly policies.

The city is situated on the north central division of the state by the foothills of the southern Appalachian Mountains.
